Dermal Fillers Q & A
Dr. Mark Rawson provides several types of dermal fillers that can dramatically improve your appearance by softening wrinkles, enlarging lips, and plumping cheeks. At the Lifespan Center for Integrative Medicine in Minnetonka, Minnesota, we treat the signs of aging while offering integrative care to ensure your nutrition and lifestyle support healthy skin.
Why would you need a dermal filler?
A thin layer of fat under the skin prevents skin from laying right on top of muscle and bone, which would give you a gaunt appearance. The fat adds just enough volume and cushioning to make you look healthy and minimize lines and wrinkles. As you age, this natural fat begins to thin out and skin loses elasticity, so cheeks begin to look hollow, wrinkles become more noticeable, and lips can droop. Dermal fillers replace the lost fat, which quickly and easily corrects the problem.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injected under the skin to naturally plump up skin and fill out wrinkles. When you come to Lifespan Center for Integrative Medicine, you may get one of these fillers:
Juvederm™ – These dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a moisturizer naturally produced in your skin. Juvederm products are used to enlarge lips, increase volume in cheeks, and smooth moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth.
Radiesse® – Radiesse is a cosmetic filler made from microscopic-sized particles suspended in a gel-like solution. The round particles are made from calcium hydroxylapatite, which is the same mineral used to build bones. When it’s first injected, Radiesse works like any other dermal filler, plumping skin and reducing lines, but over time, it also stimulates the production of new collagen, which strengthens and tightens skin. This product minimizes deep lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, but it’s also approved to treat defects in the head, neck and face.
How can Dr. Rawson help meet your cosmetic expectations?
Injecting a dermal filler is painless and safe — and yields immediate results — but it also requires Dr. Rawson’s skill and experience to get the best results. Dr. Rawson will take the time to talk with you about the changes you want to see in your appearance, and then he’ll explain the procedure and the results you can expect.
He also complements cosmetic treatments with consultations and advice about your whole-body health. Dr. Rawson will assess your diet to be sure it provides sufficient nutrients to support healthy skin and determine whether you might benefit from supplements.
